It’s that time of year: the weather’s unpredictable, it’s a little too warm for your winter wools but still a bit chilly for full on spring wear. Working in closets the last couple of weeks, I’ve had a lot of questions about which items to keep out for spring and which to put away for winter. Here’s a little study guide to help you take baby steps toward warm weather fashion.
Cashmere can move into spring
Cashmere sweaters or cardigans can be a great choice heading into spring, even summer, especially when they are in lighter colors and/or are lightweight. Reach for them as great layering pieces for when days are flip flopping between warm and cold.
Boots keep on giving
Not only are boots great for the fall/winter fashion season, but they can also march right into spring months. Boots, especially in lighter colors, make great companions to skirts and dresses (you can even go bare legged with just a bit of knee peeking out!). Ankle booties are great with rolled up jeans or when worn with a long knit skirt and a casual chambray top.
Stripes are so darn springy
For the love of stripes, get yourself in them this spring. Blouses, sweaters, dresses, scarves; stripes in anything is the perfect pattern to pull out now. Get creative and mix stripes with stripes or stripes with floral prints.
Take a black dress into spring by adding a colorful necklace and light colored boots.
A striped sweater topped with a floral scarf will keep you warm and feeling seasonal.
Vests are essential to strategic layering: you can layer them under and over just about anything.
Shorts are not mandatory
Warm weather brings the temptation to wear less clothing but shorts may be going too far. If you are not a fan, try an ankle pant or wear a shirt dress to cool off.
Love your leather
Lightweight leather can be great in the springtime. Bomber jackets provide protection from the elements when a heavier coat would be too much. Light shades of leather are classy in dresses, skirts, and peplum tops.
Scarves may be your go to accessory
A great way to add spring colors to your wardrobe for a small investment is a colorful print scarf. Keep wearing wool ones if they don’t look too heavy or too dark. It might be time to shift to scarves in silk, cotton, or linen.
Outsmart the weather with layers
When the weather can jump 20 degrees in spring days, you have to dress smart. Strategic layering is the answer. Be sure your outfit looks cute with or without that outer layer because you could be taking it on and off a few times in a single day. Look for cotton cardigans, crocheted sweaters and vests.
Black is forever green
Your black clothing items do not have to hibernate in the spring and summer months. They are great year round and can be part of your outfit. Help black shift into spring by adding a spot of color in an accessory. Or do some color blocking by wearing a black pant with a geranium red or turquoise top.
Get wild and have fun
Prints and patterns are plentiful in the spring. Go out and find one you resonate with and that will fit into your current wardrobe. Make an outfit to show off your favorite prints of the spring season.
Wear your whites
You don’t have to wait until Memorial Day to wear your whites. Go ahead and pull out your white jeans, tops and jackets. Pair them with darker textured pieces until you’re ready to fully embrace spring.
